Medline...The National Library of Medicine's free Medline service with abstracts and a "related articles"feature that lists references on the topic of interest.

Searching the Web

Medline is NOT an Internet search engine. Click here if you want a Medline search.

Medical Search Engines..PGI's list.

There are two kinds of general search engine...

Directories...a data base of websites specifically chosen by the directory managers

Indexes...a data base of websites and web pages gathered automatically from the web.

Directories are efficient, indices are comprehensive. A thorough search will probably require using two or more search engines. A good strategy is to start with a Directory, such as Yahoo!, followed by an Index like Google

ListServs

Listservs are two-way electronic newsletters: subscribers communicate with the newslettereditor and each other. There are hundreds of medical listservs on every conceivable medical topic(and thousands of non-medical listservs, too.

Click here to search for Listservs by topic.

Tips

ListServe material is distributed to your e-mail box. Subscribing to more than four listservs putsyou at risk for finding several dozen letters in your mailbox every couple of days. Choose your lists carefully.

Subscribing and unsubscribing to a ListServe is done automatically and not through the ListServeeditor. When you subscribe, you'll be given directions on how to unsubscribe. Don't lose them. Posting an "unsubscribe" message on a Listserv will let everyone on the list know you want to get off, but it may not get you what you want.
